Air Travel Hacks: Finding Cheap Flights

The most common question from readers is How do I find cheap airfares? Airfare is very often the most expensive part of a trip and finding seriously cheap flights can really help your travel budget and can save your 100 dollars. It can be really frustrating finding a cheap flight for your next adventure, so  here are all my tips and tricks on the best way to find the cheapest flights to anywhere on the blue planet.

Be Flexible-

Two of the easiest ways to find cheap flights is to fly mid-week or on the actual holiday (i.e. Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day) since fewer people travel on these days. One has the maximum chances of finding the lowest air tickets if the travel dates are flexible. Flying at unpopular hours, such as the wee hours in the morning increases your chance of getting cheap flights as the least expensive flights leave either very early in the morning or late at night. "Be willing to take early, pre-sunrise morning flights, and search multiple airports. Always be flexible in your travel dates and times. Be aware of the days and months when most people travel to your intended destination ("in-season" dates), so you can book your flight during the off-season. “If you want to go to Europe, then plan your itinerary accordingly." You know that tourists commonly visit Europe during the summer, so book your ticket during spring or fall season because airfare is cheaper due to less competition. Flexibility is king. Be flexible with where and when to go. Many airlines fly planes at night to maximize fleet efficiency, even though they don’t profit from night flights.

Cheapest days-

What are the cheapest days to travel? In general Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday are the cheapest days to travel. Friday and Sunday are usually the most expensive days.

Book early-

Usually, plane tickets jump in price during the final three weeks before departure. Another reason to book early is to ensure you get the seat you want, especially for peak season flights.  Although, we must tell you that an optimal time to book a flight ticket according to a study is on average 7 weeks in advance for domestic flights and 11 to 12 weeks for international flights.

Alternate airports-

When you’re looking for the flights online, check if there are more than one airport at the destination you are visiting. Indeed, there are fair chances that the flight tickets to two different airport may vary, one being cheaper than the other. If there is more than one airport near your origin or destination city, check them both other.

 Flight Comparison Websites-

Comparison sites can be extremely helpful, in fact, they actually lessen down your work by listing all those websites that are offering the cheap air tickets. Skyscanner, Momondo, Kayak, Priceline, and Hopper app. Use several websites for your search.

Frequent Flyer Program-

Earn points towards cheaper fares, upgrades, free tickets for two, and even free flights.

Book Connecting Flights-

Booking connecting flights can sometimes save you a good amount. When booking long-haul flights it will nearly always prove cheaper to book a flight with a connection somewhere rather than a direct one. Whilst this will inevitably increase your travel time, it does give you the chance to stretch properly and will most likely save you a packet too! f you're not in a rush to get where you're going, it might also be worth considering a layover to help keep costs down.

Budget carriers-

Norwegian, spirit airlines, RyanAir, and Wow Air, JetBlue, AirAsia X, and LEVEL. Low-cost airlines are those that sell only the airfare and then you have to pay for everything else like food, entertainment on board, luggage etc. Ryanair and Vueling in Europe, Virgin America in the U.S. and AirAsia in Malaysia.

Incognito mode-

Keep your search a secret by doing it in incognito mode. In google chrome, you can simply do it by pressing Ctrl + Shift + N. You can also go to the settings icon of your browser and click New incognito window. Safari also provides you with this incognito mode option. Go incognito when booking flights.  try deleting your search cookies (yes, this is what websites keep asking your permission to use each time you visit a page!) and see what happens to the price once your browser history has been wiped.

Avoid peak travel months-

The cheapest time of year to fly is usually:

January through mid-May

September through early December

The most expensive time to fly is usually:

Peak summer: mid-June through mid-August

Christmas

New Year’s Eve

If you'll be traveling within

Europe, book one-way tickets

instead of round-trip flights-

"If you’re planning on traveling internationally, don’t book round-trip. You can find very affordable rates to travel around Europe (I’m talking $30-$50 to go from London to Paris, Paris to Rome, Rome to Barcelona) and then flying home from your final destination instead of spending a lot of money buying a pricier round-trip ticket."

For student-

If you're a student, book through Student Universe. If you are a student, you can sometimes find special prices for your flights A good site to search for student flights is STA Travel (Student Travel Agency).
